Monitoring Tools
Choose a monitoring tool by the failure you need to catch, not by the length of its feature list.
Pick the alert that protects the business
Start with the event that would cost you money or trust. A basic uptime alert is enough for some sites. A store, booking system, or customer portal may also need transaction checks, speed data, and reports that show what visitors experienced.
| Monitoring tool | Best fit | Useful checks | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| UptimeRobot | A clear first monitor for websites, APIs, ports, and scheduled jobs | Availability, response time, SSL expiry, domain expiry, keyword, DNS, and heartbeat alerts | You need fast outage detection, simple alerts, or a public status page without starting with a heavier performance suite. |
| Pingdom | A broader view of availability and visitor experience | Uptime, page speed, transaction flows, real-user monitoring, alerts, and shareable reports | Revenue depends on logins, checkout, forms, speed, or proof of what real visitors experienced. |
Use both only when the jobs are different
Two tools watching the same homepage can create more noise without reducing much risk. A better split is one tool for independent outage detection and another for a critical transaction or real-user performance.
Test the alert before trusting the monitor
- Send the alert to the person who can act.
- Trigger a safe test and confirm the alert arrives.
- Write the first response beside the alert.
- Review the check after a real outage, vendor change, or site rebuild.
Use the digital risk assessment if you are not sure how monitoring fits the larger score. Pair the alert with the business continuity checklist so the team knows what happens after it fires.
